Pharrell Williams, the Billion-Dollar DEI Hire Who Hates DEI
as if mondays weren’t bad enough
This morning I woke up in Paris, still half-dead from the weekend, phone already blowing up. Pharrell was trending, nothing new, he is at times the internet’s favorite chew toy, ( I can relate ) usually for some outfit or bag he wore. I sat down for breakfast on this crisp November morning and opened Twitter, sorry, X, and there it is: Pharrell, perched on a panel for his 5th annual Black Ambition Demo day, telling the world with a straight face that DEI is bad and that he hates politics. I actually paused my croissant mid-bite because… are you fucking shitting me?
From one Black American in Paris working in fashion to another:
Pharrell Williams, you are literally the most expensive diversity, equity, and inclusion hire in the history of European luxury fashion. You are the €250 million, Humanrace-skincare-glazed proof that DEI can be extremely profitable, provided the “D” stands for “don’t scare the shareholders.” Let me break it down.
Virgil dies. Tragic, untimely, seismic. Within minutes, LVMH’s calculators start whirring. Fashion is a business, after all. They don’t need another technical savant; they need someone who can inherit the cultural equity Virgil built without inheriting the parts that made white people clutch their Birkins (read: the politics). Enter Pharrell: same melanin, better smile, zero interest in making anyone uncomfortable about colonialism while selling them a €40,000 monogram trunk. Continuity? Yes. Meritocracy? Girl, be serious.
Grace Wales Bonner, Martine Rose, Telfar Clemens were all names floated in the press, actual visionaries in my opinion with technique, edge, and unapologetic Black storytelling. Cute. But those were the decoys: diversity fig leaves tossed to trade journals while the board quietly locked in the most likely already pre-approved parachute. The Black multi-millionaire who already had the keys to the culture and zero intention of rattling a corporate cage.
Pharrell’s fashion history is… a curriculum in cultural infiltration. The man has been mining streetwear for gold since 2003, co-founding Billionaire Boys Club with Nigo, dropping Ice Cream sneakers that flipped BAPE into high-heat hype, collaborating with Reebok, Adidas, Chanel (#CHANELPHARRELL), Moncler, even custom Timberlands back when Karl Lagerfeld was still alive to co-sign the chaos. Millionaire sunglasses for LV under Marc Jacobs, jewelry lines in 2008, Humanrace basics empire distributed by Adidas. To be blunt Vuitton didn’t hire him for his draping skills, they’ve been underwhelming, but for the pre-vetted Black cool that could keep the Virgil revenue humming on autopilot. Which, of course, explains why he hates DEI. The fashion industry didn’t need IT… they needed HIM.
I’m laughing to myself as I write this because pre-LV Pharrell was anything but Switzerland. During BLM he was loud, statements, interviews, panels, launched initiatives to uplift and support minorities, the whole “use your platform” era, unapologetically Black and unbothered by who felt indicted. The American Revolution 2.0, he called it. Then the Vuitton job lands, and suddenly, as Beyoncé said: look around everybody… on MUTE.
And now he sits there, under his sunglasses, preaching that diversity kills excellence. Sweetie, the only thing dying up in that atelier is the lie that you earned that seat in a fair fight. You were airlifted in because the culture Virgil built was too profitable to breathe on its own. You were the only Black celebrity rich enough, tame enough, and spiritually enlightened enough to keep the cash registers singing “Happy” without ever asking why the choir was 98% white for 170 years.
Super rich Black people really do live on a different planet. Aliens to me. Pharrell’s orbit is especially high. With that many commas in your net worth, systemic racism becomes a nostalgic Spotify playlist you cue when you need to remind new money you’re still “authentic.” So please spare us the breathy “I hate politics” routine. For you, being Black stopped being political the day private security started walking in front of the racism. For the rest of us, our skin is still the oldest political act on earth.
In France, you’re double-exotic: Black and American, the chicest kind of diversity garnish. The ultimate Macron photo-op in human form. You make for an utterly fabulous dinner guest at the Élysée Palace. They love you because you let them feel woke without ever venturing into the banlieues.
I’ve never pretended my own seats at certain tables were purely about talent. I’m loud, Black, and chronically online; my otherness is the entrée. The difference is I don’t lie about the recipe. Pharrell wants to delete the ingredients list after eating the entire cake, conveniently just as DEI is no longer lucrative. So spare me the millionaire TED Talk about how it destroys merit. You didn’t beat out 400 designers in a blind portfolio review. You were the diversity. You were the inclusion. You were the equity investment in a cowboy hat.
You cashed the biggest race check in fashion history, then turned around and told the rest of us the bank is closed. And you know that, which is why you keep that perpetual kindergarten smile stretched across your face like a Louis Vuitton dust bag over a dirty secret. Because if you ever let the mask slip, if you ever admitted that Virgil had to be a once-in-a-generation polymath just to get in the door while you just had to be famous, rich, and muzzled at the first sight of a dollar sign, the whole charade collapses.
Virgil died proving the seat could be occupied by a Black man who was undeniably, excruciatingly better than everyone else in the room.
You, Pharrell, are living proof that in luxury, Blackness is welcome, as long as it’s never disruptive.
Enjoy it while it lasts.
