I was genuinely confused by his statement because, your existence alone as a Black man is "political" whether you want to believe it or not. The Black entrepreneurs that only received 1% of venture capital funding understands how VERY real politics are. The 42 million Americans who were not able to receive snap benefits, understand how VERY real politics are. The 300,000 Black women that lost their jobs, are living in a reality impacted by politics. I'm actually shocked that no one on that panel challenged his statements.

Even when he did things that looked like they were for Black people, it was never for the culture it was for social capital, for the money. Anything you saw him do “for us” was performative. We are the culture; he was just acting like he was part of it so he could cash in again. He plays the role of community leader, then turns around and does things with his oppressors he always use the racial card for his benefit (Perrotin is the latest example. He’s never there to actually liberate the oppressed; he just pretends. This has always been the game. Like Beyoncé, it’s an revolutionary aesthetic, they look engaged, but they never do the real work. They are Black capitalists. They’re only here for money, the photo ops, the likes not to actually change anything.
He is the continuity of Virgil and all those “for the culture” straight individuals.

I been a DEI hire, and it always forces me to do work that’s oblique to my talents and goals. There is a mediocrity that’s fostered in a DEI hire, though Pharrell is not the right person to say it. I’m not saying DEI shouldn’t exist, but I think people should be extremely aware of what it entails for them: safety, access to resources, and at least a bit of mission slip. Why else would the people who profit off you, pay you?
Case in point—Pharrell is a talented musician, and now he’s making completely unremarkable fashion and even worse skincare…and that’s precisely because he was a DEI hire. In essence, Pharrell is being paid *not* to do something he’s actually good at, and he’s being paid to do it for people who don’t care about him or his community. Whether Pharrell realizes it or not, I hear self-criticism in this clip. I hope he gets out.
